Privacy policy

This policy explains what information Quantum Computers Buffalo collects, how it is used, how cookies and affiliate links work, and the privacy rights you have. Last updated: June 2026.

Note: this is a general template provided as a starting point. Review it against your actual analytics, hosting and advertising tools — and applicable laws such as the GDPR and CCPA — and adjust as needed. It is not legal advice.

Who we are

Quantum Computers Buffalo is an independent quantum computing news and education website serving Buffalo and Western New York, published by AldoMedia, LLC. This policy applies to this website. When we say "we," "us" or "our," we mean Quantum Computers Buffalo.

Information we collect

Information you provide

If you contact us (through our publisher, AldoMedia), we receive only the details you choose to share, such as your name, email address and the contents of your message. We use this solely to respond to you.

Information collected automatically

Like most websites, our hosting provider and any analytics tools may automatically log standard technical data when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type and version, device type, operating system, the pages you view, the time and date of your visit, and the website that referred you. This information helps us keep the site secure and understand which content is useful.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device. We and our partners may use a few categories of cookies:

  • Essential cookies that are necessary for the site to function and cannot be switched off in our systems.
  • Analytics cookies that help us understand, in aggregate, how visitors use the site so we can improve it.
  • Affiliate cookies set by partners such as Amazon when you click an affiliate link, used to credit referred purchases (see below).

You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings, and most browsers let you block cookies entirely. Note that blocking some cookies may affect how the site works.

Affiliate links

This site participates in the Amazon Associates Program. When you click an affiliate link, Amazon may set a cookie to track whether a purchase results, so we can be credited a referral fee. This does not change the price you pay, and we do not receive your payment details. For more detail on how this works, see our affiliate disclosure and Amazon's own privacy notice.

Analytics

We may use privacy-conscious analytics to measure traffic and improve content. Analytics data is used in aggregate to understand trends — for example, which explainers are most read — rather than to identify you personally. If you prefer, you can use browser settings or extensions that limit analytics tracking.

How we use information

  • To respond to your messages and inquiries.
  • To operate, maintain and secure the website.
  • To understand site usage and improve our content and structure.
  • To operate affiliate relationships that help fund the site.
  • To comply with legal obligations.

Legal bases for processing

Where the GDPR applies, we process personal data on the bases of our legitimate interests (operating and improving a secure website), your consent (for non-essential cookies, where required), and compliance with legal obligations. Where required, we ask for consent before setting non-essential cookies.

How information is shared

We do not sell your personal information. Limited data may be processed by service providers acting on our behalf — for example, our website host, analytics provider, or the affiliate networks we participate in — solely to operate the site. These providers are expected to handle data securely and only for the purposes we specify. We may also disclose information if required by law.

Data retention

We keep personal information only as long as necessary for the purposes described here — for example, retaining correspondence long enough to handle your request — and then delete or anonymize it. Server logs and analytics data are typically retained for a limited period in line with our providers' standard settings.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict the use of your personal information, to object to certain processing, and to data portability. California residents have rights under the CCPA, including the right to know what personal information is collected and the right to opt out of its sale (we do not sell personal information). To exercise any right, please contact us; we may need to verify your identity before responding.

Children's privacy

This site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.

Data security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, including serving the site over HTTPS. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

International visitors

We are based in the United States, and information may be processed in the U.S. or other countries where our service providers operate. By using the site, you understand that your information may be transferred to and processed in countries with different data-protection rules than your own.

Third-party links

Our site links to other websites, such as Amazon, the University at Buffalo, and news sources. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites; we encourage you to review their privacy policies.

Do Not Track signals

Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" (DNT) setting that signals you do not wish to be tracked across websites. There is currently no industry-wide standard for how sites must respond to DNT signals. We aim to keep tracking minimal regardless, and any analytics we use is configured to report in aggregate. Where the law requires us to honor specific opt-out signals, such as Global Privacy Control, we do so.

Email communications

If you contact us, we use your email address only to reply and to keep a record of the correspondence. We do not currently operate a marketing newsletter, so we will not add you to a mailing list or send promotional emails without your request. If we introduce an opt-in newsletter in the future, it will include a clear unsubscribe link in every message, and subscribing will always be voluntary.

Managing cookies in your browser

You are in control of cookies. Every major browser lets you view, block or delete cookies through its settings, and most let you block third-party cookies specifically, which would include affiliate and some analytics cookies. You can also browse in a private or incognito window, which typically clears cookies when you close it. Help pages for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge all explain how to manage cookies in a few clicks. Remember that blocking certain cookies may affect how some features of this or other websites work, and may prevent affiliate purchases from being credited to us.

Aggregated and de-identified data

We may aggregate or de-identify information so that it no longer reasonably identifies you — for example, counting how many people read a particular explainer. Aggregated and de-identified data is not personal information, and we may use and retain it to understand trends, measure the reach of our content, and improve the site. We will not attempt to re-identify such data.

Your choices and opt-outs

Beyond managing cookies, you have several choices about your data. You can choose not to provide personal information by simply not contacting us. You can use browser tools or extensions that limit analytics and advertising tracking. You can opt out of interest-based advertising through industry tools offered by the Digital Advertising Alliance and the Network Advertising Initiative. And, depending on your location, you can ask us to access or delete the limited personal information we hold by contacting us. We will respond in line with applicable law and may need to verify your identity first.

Links from news and retail sources

Throughout this site we link to third parties such as the University at Buffalo, news outlets and Amazon. Once you follow such a link, you are subject to that site's privacy practices, not ours. We choose reputable sources, but we cannot control how they collect or use data, so we encourage you to review the privacy policy of any site you visit from here.

State privacy rights

In addition to the rights described above, residents of certain U.S. states have specific privacy rights. California's "Shine the Light" law lets residents request information about disclosures of personal information for third-party direct marketing; we do not share personal information for that purpose. Residents of states with comprehensive privacy laws may have rights to access, correct, delete and limit the use of their personal information, and to appeal a denied request. To exercise any of these rights, contact us and we will respond as required by applicable law.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "last updated" date above. Significant changes may be highlighted on the site.
